Other Criminal Matters

Other Criminal Matters

Our Other Criminal Matters group covers misdemeanors, juvenile cases, appeals for when a case has already been completed. This practice group really is an all-encompassing group that makes sure that all the loose ends of somebody's case are really tied together.

You have to put the work into win these cases, and we put the work in to win these cases or give you the best defense that you can get. Whether it's the lowest misdemeanor up until the highest felony.

We want the person to understand that we are there with them, that we are going to explain the process with them, and that they can trust what we're telling them. We are well known among all of the misdemeanor courts here in Western Michigan.

The judges know us, the prosecutors know us, and the various city attorneys who also handle the misdemeanor cases know us. We have an incredible reputation with all of them.

I would call SBBL because you don't have just one attorney working for you. You have a firm. I guarantee you're going to get the best outcome possible.

Our firm focuses on criminal defense, but not all our cases take place in felony trial court. SBBL Law offers its extensive trial experience to help clients facing criminal misdemeanors, juvenile offenses, federal or state grand jury investigations, and federal or state criminal appeals. We handle federal cases throughout the United States and state cases throughout Michigan.

Our Approach

Our team brings the same expertise and intensity to all other criminal matters that it brings to its felony cases. Whether our clients are facing a misdemeanor, juvenile case, a grand jury investigation, or an appeal, we understand that this is the first exposure to the criminal justice system for many of our clients. Just as in our felony trials, we thoroughly review all evidence, seek weaknesses in the case, explore potential motions, and work to understand all potential options.

Misdemeanors

Misdemeanor charges are scary because they often represent the first-ever criminal charges for our clients. From minor in possession to drug use and possession, and from domestic violence to driving offenses, misdemeanors can sometimes be used as a negotiating tool for prosecutors to secure an early plea deal. Our team brings the same fight on misdemeanor charges as it does on felonies. We look for weaknesses in the case and are not afraid to bring charges to trial.

We represent clients in misdemeanor cases throughout Michigan.

Juvenile Offenses & HYTA

Juvenile offenses are not technically criminal charges, but the stakes can be just as high. Our juvenile defense team understands that juvenile charges may be a family’s first exposure to the criminal justice system. We regularly negotiate for diversion instead of prosecution to protect the minor’s record. We also appear before school boards and work with school districts to minimize disruption to the student’s education and to encourage schools not to punish students without understanding all the facts. For juveniles with more complicated juvenile records, we understand the challenges of shifting family dynamics, ADHD, behavioral challenges, and other issues often present in these cases. We treat all of our clients and families with empathy, and we look for solutions, not problems.

We represent juveniles in cases throughout Michigan.

Grand Jury Investigations

Grand jury investigations are an arm of the government’s investigation authority before charges are issued. We represent individuals called to testify as witnesses in grand jury investigations in state cases throughout Michigan and in federal cases nationwide.

The federal government must take cases to the grand jury before issuing an indictment unless the defendant waives the right for the case to be reviewed by a grand jury. Sometimes federal cases start with a felony complaint or felony information rather than an indictment. Still, the prosecutor must take the case to a grand jury within a certain amount of time unless the defendant waives the right for a grand jury to hear the case. Grand jury proceedings are secret, and neither the prosecutor nor the members of the grand jury may disclose the names of any grand jury witnesses or the contents of their testimony unless the case later goes to trial and the person is called as a trial witness. Often, federal prosecutors will call witnesses to a grand jury who may be facing the possibility of criminal charges themselves. Hiring an experienced federal criminal defense attorney can be crucial to ensure adequate protections for the person testifying.

In Michigan state courts, a prosecutor can also use a grand jury to investigate charges, although it is less common than in the federal system. Our grand jury attorneys assist witnesses called to the grand jury to ensure they do not inadvertently incriminate themselves.

Criminal Appeals

Most criminal appeals occur after a defendant is sentenced. Strict timelines and formatting rules apply to filing an appeal and require an attorney with specialized expertise. Our appellate attorneys regularly file appeals in complex criminal cases and present oral arguments before the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Sixth Circuit for the United States Court of Appeals. Common avenues for appeal include sentencing guidelines errors, trial errors, the denial of motions to suppress evidence, violation of constitutional rights, changes in the law, newly discovered evidence, habeas corpus, and ineffective assistance of counsel.

We represent clients filing appeals in state cases throughout Michigan and in federal courts nationwide.
